An Appeal for Help.
The Church of South India Diocese of Vellore operates 6 hostels for children which enable them to receive education, health and social care. In the past these hostels, which provide care for 607 girls and boys, have been funded by two organisations (The Churches Council for Child and Youth Care, Bangalore and Compassion International). However, changes in government policy have stopped this funding and the Diocese is supporting the children itself. This inevitably is putting a great strain on its finances. We have received an appeal for help from Vellore.
The hostels enable village children who live too far from secondary schools to travel daily to live close to the school and so access an education which will change their lives. The hostels are far from luxurious, but they provide a safe, clean environment and the stability necessary for the children, some of whom are disabled, to gain an
education and the opportunity to flourish.
The diocese is looking for the equivalent of approximately £11 per child per month to enable the hostels to continue functioning. That is £7,370 per month or £88,440 over a year. The churches of the Cambridgeshire Ecumenical Council are asked if they can contribute to meet, in some part, this evident need. One off gifts will be welcomed, and regular support would help. Whatever can be given will have a significant, positive impact on the life of a child in the area covered by the Vellore Diocese.
Please consider what you or your church might be able to do. Gifts (cheques, made out to Cambridgeshire Ecumenical Council - Vellore) should be sent to Delia Suffling (Vellore Link Treasurer), Friends Meeting House, 12 Jesus Lane, Cambridge, CB5 8BA. Thank you for your help and prayers.
The hostels are
VRC Boarding Home for Girls, Ranipet 208 girls
Ida Scudder Girls Home, Tindivanam 119 girls
Dr C K Job Memorial Girls Home, Gnanodayam 25 girls
CSI Boarding Home for Boys, Arni 60 boys
Sherman Memorial Girls Home, Chittoor 45 girls
